Organizational Histories

AWI has published five organizational histories.  The three earliest were compiled by Mrs. Cornelia R. Wood under the direction of the AWI Council. The first two are sequential; the third was a revision of the first two; and the fourth completed the organization’s history to the date of publication in 1975. Each book provides an organizational perspective on selected projects, life histories of its presidents, salient information about its annual conventions, as well as the names of AWI officers.  These histories were published as booklets; their audience was internal.

In 1997, the AWI commissioned a comprehensive organizational history which was to be published conventionally and made available to both AWI members and the general public. Many and Remarkable provides an overview of AWI from its inception to the mid 1990s. Unlike the first four histories, which focus on the organization itself, Many and Remarkable includes social, economic and political context.
